While caffeine can help us stay up late to complete our work, it can also cause anxiety for some. There are some people whose bodies can metabolise caffeine well, which dampens the effects of the stimulant. However, for those whose bodies can’t break down the substance as well, they have a higher chance of experiencing anxiety as a result of over-stimulation.
Excessive consumption of sugar can lead to inflammation of the body, which can lead to a negative shift in one’s mood. Like caffeine, sugar is also a potent stimulant that can lead to “highs”, only to be followed by even more terrible “lows”.
3. Menstrual cycles
It is a well-documented fact of how periods can lead to mood swings in most women. Hormonal imbalances are the cause, and anxiety is one of the more common emotions felt during this period of time.
The thyroid is key to numerous biological processes, so if there’s an issue with your thyroid, it can affect your ability to handle stress and lead to feelings of anxiety.
Drinking one’s problems away has a habit of only leading to more. Unfortunately, anxiety just happens to be one of them. In fact, studies have shown that consuming alcohol only worsens anxiety, so that’s a strict no-no on that.
6. Increased LPS
Increased lipopolysaccharides (LPS) levels in our bodies are mostly due to the unhealthy and processed foods we consume. Regularly eating these foods will negatively affect our gut and can cause “leaky gut syndrome”. As a result, harmful bacterial from the gut can leak and enter the bloodstream, potentially leading to inflammation and anxiety as well.
There have been several studies that shows a link between anxiety and certain viruses. Types such as cytomegalovirus (CMV) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) are known to result in feelings of anxiety manifesting as a symptom.
8. Lyme disease
Still a disease that is lacking a complete cure, Lyme disease is a rather nefarious condition to treat. As the disease affects the neurology of the person, it is not uncommon to see patients suffering from anxiety as one of the neurological symptoms.
9. Imbalanced blood sugar
Blood sugar levels are an important part of our body as glucose is required to fuel functions in both our mind and body. Having imbalanced sugar levels can drive your mood in different directions, with anxiety being one of the routes.
10. Nutrient deficiency
There is no such thing as a useless or spare nutrient; each one is responsible for something. The lack of certain nutrients such as lithium, vitamin D and magnesium can cause anxious feelings to develop.
While some of us might be more emotionally predisposed to getting anxious, it can also be affected by external factors, such as our diet or even situation in life. Luckily, most of the things mentioned in the above list can be controlled via our habits and actions, so take control of them before your feelings get the better of you!
