For those who don’t know, it is the peanut-sized gland in the front of the neck that is involved in the secretion of hormones that control enzymes, body temperatures, energy levels, growth and development, and many other important functions of the body. Having an overstimulated thyroid or an underperforming thyroid can wreck reasonable amounts of havoc on the body. Here are 5 things you can do to ensure that your thyroid stays healthy:


1. Lower your stress levels

Many external factors can have an effect on the internal workings of your body. In the case of your thyroid, it is stress that you have to watch out for. When stress levels are high, the stress hormone cortisol is released, and chronically elevated cortisol levels can hinder the thyroid response.


To counter this problem, simply try to relax by taking a break to do something you enjoy or even engage in mind-body activities like yoga. By keeping normal cortisol levels, your thyroid will be more efficient.


2. Maintain your sugar intake

Eating too much carbohydrates and sugar can cause a sharp increase in insulin which can disturb cortisol levels, and that, in turn, can adversely affect the thyroid. It is no surprise then that most obese individuals encounter issues regarding an underactive thyroid, resulting in feelings of sluggishness and low energy levels.


A reduction in net carbohydrate intake can help to better regulate blood glucose levels. Replacing those calories with protein and fat will allow you to have enough energy to go about your tasks


3. Address obesity

Leptin is a hormone that signals satiety. Unfortunately, obesity tend to make the brain less receptive to leptin, which causes you to experience hunger even when you’re actually not, making you eat excessively. This can trigger increase in insulin and cortisol, both of which can affect the thyroid negatively.


Committing to an exercise routine and a healthy diet can go a long way towards regaining health and balance. When your hormones levels stabilise, so will your thyroid health.


4. Reduce inflammation

Your body can enter an inflammatory state when your diet and lifestyle start to get out of control. All these will lead back to a fluctuation of your hormone levels, and not in a good way. As a result, your thyroid will not be able to convert the inactive thyroid hormone to its active form, leading to a condition known as “tissue hypothyroidism”.


Like almost everything, lowering inflammation starts with a healthy lifestyle. By consuming more fruits and vegetables, you take in loads of anti-oxidants that can help to combat inflammation.


5. Maintain a healthy gut

The healthy gut contains lots of healthy bacteria that are crucial for maintaining gastrointestinal health. A compromised gut can have negative effects on the body’s ability to absorb nutrients, which will adversely affect your thyroid via cortisol elevation and oestrogen dominance.


Cutting down or eliminating refined and processed food from one’s diet can give your gut the space it needs to heal. Supplementing with quality probiotics can also speed up the recovery process.


When it comes to the importance of body parts, size doesn’t really matter as much as you think it does. The thyroid’s contribution to health cannot be overlooked, so it pays to look after it as best as you can.
