5 ways to manage work-related stress

Whether you’ve only just started getting your feet wet in the working lifestyle or are already a corporate veteran, stress is something that will occur with absolute certainty and without discrimination. Impending deadlines, overdue work and last-minute changes are present in almost any field of work. Instead of falling prey to such incidents, here are 5 ways you can turn the tables and come out a happier and healthier person:


1. Move more

Exercising, or any form of movement, can be very useful when it comes to reducing stress. It gets the heart and blood pumping, stimulating endorphins that improve mood and make us feel good. It doesn’t matter if you don’t consider yourself the athletic type; simple acts of movements such as walking, stretching or doing housework can still help to get your blood flowing.


2. Eat better

What we eat can have a profound effect on our moods and how we handle intense emotions such as stress. By eating foods which are rich in anti-oxidants and omega-3s, cortisol levels in our body are effectively reduced, which also decreases our stress levels. Such foods include nuts, seeds and salmon. If these food items aren’t in your kitchen, then it’s time for some serious grocery shopping!


3. Use essential oils

Fragrances can have a positive effect on our moods, and that’s where essential oils come in. Essential oils are basically distilled essence from plants in its purest form. Scent molecules are so small that they can trigger the olfactory nerve when inhaled. As the olfactory nerve is linked to the limbic system, it can help to control and improve our moods among many other things. Well-known stress-reducing essential oils include lavender, ylang ylang and vetiver.


4. Meditate

Our brains work all day and they deserve a break just as much as our bodies do. Meditation helps to clear the mind such that it isn’t preoccupied with anything, giving it a valuable opportunity to rest. This calming exercise can greatly benefit your mental state by helping you achieve mindfulness, which has more far-reaching effects than just reducing stress levels.


5. Find and schedule time to relax

It is inevitable that there will be periods where you get really busy and have to deal with a fully-packed schedule. However, it definitely pays to set aside some time as “me” time. Like meditation, this allows your mind and body to rejuvenate itself by doing something you enjoy for a change. Even taking a nap in lieu of an activity is just as good, maybe even better!


Everyone experiences stress, but what matters most is how you deal with it. Instead of looking to things like alcohol or binge snacking as a means of coping, go with methods that focus on restoration. You’ll feel better without having to worry about any nasty side effects like hangovers or pudginess!
