Are you making the most of 2019?

Are you making the most of 2019?

It is already halfway through 2019 and most people have already achieved their new year resolutions. However, there are also a good number of people who have faltered and have given up. At the start of the year, everyone is motivated and determined to make a change in their lives. However, we all come to realise the cold truth sooner or later — motivation is fleeting and that it takes more than that alone to follow through with their plans. It's still not too late to make a change this year – here are some tips to give you a little boost:

Focus on the process

One of the most common resolutions is to “get in shape”. When we start hitting the gym, it might take a long time for us to reap the rewards of our hard work. Even professional athletes face plateaus in progression from time to time and when they reach this phase, they re-evaluate their training programmes and carry on. People who are overly fixated on results tend to give up quickly because success is not always linear. On the other hand, people driven by the process tend to see more improvement and often find it easier to persevere. After all, if you enjoy the process of what you are doing, keeping to your plan won’t be as big of a chore.

Manage your expectations

People often start off the new year by setting high expectations and goals for themselves. Yes, these goals are possible to reach but how likely are they to reach them? We need to understand ourselves and give ourselves some leeway. As human beings, we will get tired, fall sick or hit plateaus. Furthermore, work and family commitments might also not allow us to be as strict with our training schedule as we'd like. It is thus important to manage our expectations to avoid disappointment. Start by setting small, short-term goals that are realistically attainable for yourself. Reward yourself for each small goal reached, and you might be more motivated to keep to your plan.

Know yourself

People often rush into a new activity or create a new goal for themselves because they see someone else doing it. They often jump on the bandwagon with a fervent desire to keep up with the trend. However, when the trend dies down, so does their enthusiasm for their plan. Ultimately, time, effort and possibly even money ends up being wasted. The only way to prevent this is to be sure that your goals are indeed your own, not the result of some external circumstance. Don’t be swayed by social media or your friends. Aim to achieve your goals and not someone else’s , and you will find it much easier to keep to your path.

“It’s all in the mind”. I’m sure that most of us have heard of this saying before, and it is true to a very great extent.  It is important to start off with a healthy mindset, as this will carry you through the difficult times when you feel like giving up. This same principle applies to other aspects of your life, so do take a step back and focus on reaching the right mental space before taking another swing at 2019!
