Being a spiritual atheist

Getting more in tune and in touch with your spiritual side need not always be about finding religion. Similarly, understanding that there something greater exists beyond yourself within the larger context of life is not always about spiritual faith. This sense of hyperawareness can serve as a guide in life. Here are some simple ways you can achieve that sense of closeness:


  • Empty your thoughts

The mind is a powerful medium and has the ability to perceive any instance as something negative or positive. Aim for the latter to channel your energy in the right direction not just for yourself, but for the world around you. You can do this by waking up 10 minutes earlier to calm your mind. Be still and connect with your surroundings in silence. A quick bout of meditation, or even reading an inspirational piece of text is a great start. 


  • Offer help

To be less obsessed of the self, you will need to refrain from obsessing over personal wants. Be of service to others; perform a small daily act of kindness and see how you feel. It can be as simple as taking the initiative to lend someone a pen when you see them fumbling around for one, or just by smiling to a waitress. Free yourself from external judgement and take that step towards helping others.


  • Understand that spirituality is in the now

You need not be at a five-star meditation retreat in order to discover spirituality. If you do not have the luxury of time to dedicate a large portion of your day to connecting with your spiritual side, then that’s is completely fine too. Spirituality is about occupying the now and being present. It revolves around what you do for yourself and for others. Let your natural environment be a lens that allows you to find who you truly are.


  • Be inspired

Find yourself a role model that you can look up to, or a book that inspires you to be more than what you previously thought you were capable of. While it is important that you undertake a study of the self, don’t get too caught up in following any one, single approach. Everyone is unique; your understanding of spirituality should be just as such.


Learn to be at ease and be comfortable in your own skin. Not only does this result in improvements to one’s mental health, but the physical benefits are innumerable as well. Spirituality may have always been used in tandem with religious terms and symbols, but it’s heartening to know that you don’t need to be of faith in order to be strengthened by it.
