Bring grinding teeth to a halt

Teeth grinding, also known as bruxism, can be an annoying habit for both yourself and your partner. However, it can be effectively countered with both patience and determination. If you thought that salvation lies only the form of a mouth guard, then you just might be surprised by the alternatives.


For one, you can try going for Botox at your own discretion to reduce the symptoms of bruxism. If you tend to grind your teeth at night, Botox can be injected into the masseter muscle to provide relief and prevent you from waking up with sore jaws or headaches.


If you’d prefer non-invasive treatments, then cognitive behavioural therapy may be worth a shot. It is a short-term procedure that aims to help you ditch bad habits and build positive thought associations. While it cannot conclusively treat teeth grinding, it can help you alleviate stress levels at its roots and have a healthier thought pattern in a bid to prevent teeth grinding caused by stress. Hypnosis is also another way to achieve this.


Another alternative that some have sworn by is Tapping, better known as the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). It is inspired from key facets of acupuncture. However, instead of using actual acupuncture needles, this form of treatment entails the tapping of your fingers on specific pressure points on your body to provide relief. If you are too afraid of the needle, perhaps this can be a helpful option to consider. EFT has also been shown to be helpful in treating PTSD and in correcting other stress-induced habits.


For home-based remedies, you could try something as straightforward as calming your mind. Given that teeth grinding is largely driven by stress, try relaxing before going to bed. Your last thought before falling asleep should ideally be a happy thought. Different individuals have different preferences in stress relieving methods. Some prefer to do stretches, yoga, meditation, massages, a facial mask, soak in some bath salts and even do some reading. In essence, any form of self-care routine can be vastly helpful.


As with all medical conditions, it is always best to consult with a licensed doctor or even a specialist before deciding on a course of action. As attractive or convenient as some of these options may be, you should do your due diligence in educating yourself on the ins and outs of such procedures in order to paint a clearer picture. Ask, listen and deliberate before making your choice, especially when it’s to do with something that’s in your head!
