Purple lattes have been bombarding social media lately, which with their rich violet hue nestled warmly in an inviting cup with breakfast on the side. Even a simple search will be enough to flood your feed with such beautiful concoctions that seem almost to picturesque to consume. But if you were to make your own, that shouldn’t be too much an issue now, would it?

Besides looking dreamy, purple lattes are actually good for health. This is due to the colour purple typically being the result the use of beet root or elderberry, which happen to be very nourishing ingredients. The former tastes earthy, while the latter has more of a natural sweet taste to it.

Instead of using traditional cow’s milk in your latte, oat milk is a great base alternative. It is gentle on your stomach and has a similar taste and texture as that of traditional cow’s milk. Besides reducing LDL cholesterol levels, oat milk also has a rich taste and frothier texture compared to nut milks, which would explain why so many baristas use it as their choice of non-dairy creamers.

Read on to find out how you can make your very own purple and milk-free latte within five minutes in the comfort of your home. Beware though: it can be highly addictive!

  • 1 g beet root powder
  • 0.5 g elderberry powder
  • 250 ml hot water
  • ¼ tsp honey or maple syrup
  • 8 oz oat milk

In a small bowl, mix the beet root powder, elderberry powder, hot water, and honey. Steam the milk using an espresso machine or use a frother on warmed milk. Transfer the milk into a mug before stirring in the elderberry and beet root concentrate until evenly blended. Serve warm or iced according to your preference.

Pro-tip: If you are using honey instead of maple syrup, ensure that you do not use a metal spoon or stirrer. This is because honey has an acidic pH which reacts with metallic surfaces. As such, the natural healing properties of honey may be destroyed if you use a metal spoon.

There you have it: a perfectly smooth blend of flavour and goodness. Give purple lattes a try for days when you feel like taking a break from your regular coffee habit!
