The hype surrounding green tea and turmeric shots is being gradually replaced by this new kid on the block – just what is it exactly? Echinacea tea has been making headlines recently thanks to its potent health benefits, but does it really have what it takes to be the next big thing?
First and foremost, echinacea tea and echinacea supplements are derived from a native plant of North America. While it is used today to treat colds, upper respiratory conditions and infections, rumour has it that it’s medicinal use began as early as over 400 years ago as a “cure-it-all” remedy. While not to be treated as an alternative to modern anti-biotics, echinacea can be used to stimulate your immune system to work harder to fight infections.
The next time the cold season rolls along, take echinacea tea as a preventive measure. It may very well decrease your chances of catching a cold. Besides immune-boosting capabilities, echinacea tea also has anti-fungal abilities. It regulates the fungus growth level in your intestines and has been shown to decrease candida levels and prevent vaginal yeast infections. There is also ongoing research that may point to echinacea tea also being used to relieve anxiety.
There are various strains of the echinacea herb, so it is important that you choose an appropriate type of echinacea for your goals. There are three main species of echinacea- echinacea purpurea, echinacea pallida, and echinacea angustifolia. While there is no concrete or conclusive evidence as of yet, the purpurea strain seems to have performed significantly better in studies on cold symptoms. It can also be more effective when in alcoholic extracts or pressed juices as opposed to boiling it into tea. Additionally, the plant parts used also matters, so pay attention to whether it belongs to the root, flower or herb of the plant. Of course, the concentration and extraction method are also another important consideration.
There is no harm in incorporating a little bit of echinacea tea into your weekly routine. Remember that the health of your immune system should not be neglected. With a diet of nutrient-dense whole foods as your base and echinacea tea supplementing it, your chances of catching an infection should be much lower!
