Meet Moringa – the latest superfood

A vast number of superfoods may be available on the market today, but unless you’ve been actively searching for new types of superfoods, you may not have heard of moringa. So, what is moringa anyway?

 

Moringa is a tree that thrives in dry, semi-arid places like Darfur and southern Ethiopia where few plants can survive, as well as in tropical climates. 

 

As for what makes it a superfood, moringa contains all nine essential amino acids, including types of amino acids usually only found in animal proteins, as well as impressive quantities of vitamins A and C, and iron and calcium. In addition, the plant’s leaves are rich in anti-oxidants and polyphenols, phenolic acids, flavonoids and glucosinolates which have been shown to lower blood sugar, regulate blood pressure and cholesterol, and act as anti-ulcer, anti-tumor and anti-inflammatory agents.

 

As for how it tastes, moringa powder is said to taste grassy and earthy, while its leaves are delicate and flavourful, reminiscent of spinach but with slightly more bitterness and complexity. Both forms of the plant can be incorporated into foods such as stews and shakes, and could be what you need to improve the nutritional profile of your daily intake.

Moringa supplements can also be bought in powder form, which can save you time and energy from grinding it yourself.

 

Whether you’re looking to supplement your diet or simply on the search for vegan-friendly nutrient sources, moringa may be the superfood that you’re looking for. However, moringa is considered to be quite potent so be sure to proceed gradually when incorporating it into your diet for the first time. Your system needs time to get used to any new food that’s introduced to it, even one as beneficial as moringa!
