Self-treating a migraine like a pro

While the pressures of life can give us headaches every once in a while, migraines are a different story altogether. The sudden onset of persistent pain can sometimes be debilitating and end up affecting your productivity and quality of life. While painkillers might help with the physical symptoms, they may not prevent repeat episodes from occurring. Here are 5 things you can do to make your life migraine-free:


1. Change your lifestyle

Stress is one of the main factors that can lead to migraines. Making improvements to your lifestyle where you learn to manage stress better can make a significant difference to your health. For example, staying active and having 6 to 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep every night can help reduce stress levels and make you more efficient.


2. Eat better

Nutrition plays a large part when it comes to managing the risk of developing migraines. Chronic inflammation has been linked to the onset of migraines in various demographics. Instead of processed and refined foods, opt for wholesome alternatives that offer plenty of nutrients and anti-oxidants. Cutting down on stimulants like caffeine and sugar can also improve your prognosis.


3. Know your limits

While we may find joy in conquering every challenge we come across, you have to be realistic and be conscious of your body’s limitations when it comes to handling stress. Work is important, but so is your well-being. Biting off more than you can chew is never a good idea, even when you’re armed with the most potent anti-stress protocol known to man.


4. Be wary of triggers

Your migraines can be triggered by multiple factors, like certain smells of even sounds. If your triggers are environmental, knowing what they are will allow you to avoid them whenever possible. You can even go the extra step and plan “counters” for such triggers, such as smelling salts or ear buds.


5. Seek medical help early

The cause of incessant migraines could be due to an underlying medical factor, so seeking medical attention early on in such a situation can prove to be a pivotal moment. Holistic methods might help in certain cases, but there are times when modern medicine needs to intervene in order for treatment to be effective. Needless to say, if your migraine fails to subside despite your best efforts, it’s best advised that you see a doctor immediately.


Migraines are a literal pain and have no place in a healthy lifestyle. If you do experience them, then take it as sign that something in your life needs addressing. Whether it be at home or at work, only swift and decisive action will avail you the relief that you require.
