Singapore may seem small but there are certainly no shortages of great running trails in the concrete jungle. If you’re looking to explore or simply trying to find a trail closer to home, here are just a few of the top spots to run on each corner the island
North
Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve – Choose between a short 500m mangrove boardwalk, a 3km nature trail or combine them both for a picturesque run. Stop by the visitor centre to learn more about the heritage of the reserve and catch a glimpse of migrating birds at they make their way towards Australia for the Siberian Winter. From Kranji MRT Station, hop on the SMRT 925 bus, which will take you just outside the reserve.
Mandai Road – Known as one of Singapore’s oldest carriageways, Mandai Road is sheltered by rows of rain trees providing runners with plenty of shade. If you haven’t spent much time in the Northern part of Singapore, you’ve likely crossed this road on your way to the Singapore Zoological Gardens.
East
Pulau Ubin – Hop on a ferry and take a short ride over to Pulau Ubin. Be treated with miles of peaceful running trails shared with cyclist out for a ride. Spend the day and enjoy lunch at one of the islands few restaurants. The ferry ride is 2$ each way and the journey will take approximately 10 minutes.
East Coast Park to Changi Beach – Full of BBQ pits and lined with fishing enthusiast, one of the most popular spots on the east boasts great running and cycling trails with beautiful seaside views. If you’ve got a bit of the travel bug, you’ll be treated to the sight of planes taking off from the airport towards the end of the trail as you reach Changi Beach.
South
100Plus Promenade – Open 24 hours a day and sheltered from the strong sun and wet weather conditions, 100Plus Promenade is conveniently located outside Stadium MRT. Lace up your runners and enjoy a short run on the colourful tracks. Hang out at the food court or freshen up in the showers after your run.
Labrador Park/Keppel Bay – Starting just outside Labrador MRT, enjoy the great sunset view on your evening run and make your way through to Keppel Bay where you can catch a glimpse of a few high-end residences and yachts parked at the Marina. Regardless of the time of day, this route definitely doesn’t have any sea view shortages.
West
West Coast Park – If you’re staying in the area, there’s no need to travel across the island for a beautiful run. Smaller than East Coast Park but runners can enjoy a peaceful and relaxing stroll with some lovely scenery.
Bukit Timah Nature Reserve – Looking for something different for your weekend run? Make your way over to the tallest hill in Singapore at 163m high and treat yourself to an outdoor adventure. Enter from the Main Road via Hindhede Nature Park and enjoy a peaceful run while taking in the nature. Note that the reserve is open only on weekends with limited hours of 7:00AM to 6:00PM, last entry at 5:00pm.
Central
Mount Faber – The trail starts from the base of Mount Faber, just outside Harbourfront MRT and continues all the way to Kent Ridge Park. Pass by the cable cars, Henderson Waves, Canopy Walk and Hort Park for delightful views of the Red Dot. Ranging from pavement to wooden structures and even metal contraptions, the change of scenery will keep you intrigued. With high up views, plenty of nature and beautiful gardens along the way, this is a run you’ll never get tired of.
Fort Canning Park – With endless sets of stairs for a nice challenge or some quieter routes nestled in the park for a more scenic run, For Canning Park suits all needs. The maps posted along the routes will help you find your way as you familiarise yourself with the surroundings. Access the park from a few centrally located MRT stations including Dhoby Ghaut, Clark Quay and City Hall. Enjoy the views of iconic Singapore monuments as you make your way around the paths.
MacRitchie Reservoir – Sitting at the centre of the island, Singapore’s first reservoir is home to great running trails and water activities alike. Follow the paths that will take you in, around and even above the forest with the TreeTop Walk. Parking lots are available, along with showers, toilets and lockers.
Blessed with lush fauna and flourishing greenery, if you find yourself in one of the many parks around the island, it can be hard to believe that a bustling metropolitan city is only minutes away. Regardless of your location, remember that there’s always a great running spot just around the corner!
