Besides the face, hair is another physical aspect of appearance that many people first take notice of. While having great hair might be something worth talking about, perhaps a little too much has been said about the exact nature of hair – some border on plain ludicrousness! Here are 7 facts you might want to know about your hair to keep it in tip-top shape:
1. Cutting your hair doesn’t make it grow faster
If your goal is to have hair like Rapunzel’s, then having it cut every other week will only extend the waiting time. Cutting your hair won’t make it grow faster. The thing that determines the growth duration is the physiology of the hair follicle and not the hair shaft.
2. Cold water doesn’t make your hair shinier
An enduring myth is that washing your hair with cold water makes it more luscious. While this is patently untrue, steaming hot water can damage your hair, so it is best to use either warm or lukewarm water. So unless you actually have that preference, there’s no real need to subject your head to ice-cold showers!
3. Hair colouring isn’t bad for the hair
Although hair dyes do give the impression of drying out your hair, you can use various colour-rich conditioners to moisturise it. If conditioners and hair masks work to moisturise dry hair, they can do the same for coloured hair. No discrimination here!
4. Hair colouring does not damage the scalp
There are indeed cases where hair colouring jobs have resulted in a burnt scalp, but that’s because of the stronger chemicals that come with a particular dye. Furthermore, the dye should never come into direct contact with the scalp. A proficient hairdresser should be proficient in this regard and be skilful when it comes to application. The enemy isn’t hair colouring – it’s hair colouring done badly!
5. Split ends can’t be repaired
Split ends can give the hair a dull and dry appearance. They can make brushing one’s hair more difficult because of the need to pull and tug at certain points. Despite what some hot oil treatments would have you believe, there aren’t any real ways to counteract this problem. Damage to the outer protective layer of the hair means that the only way to get rid of it is to actually get rid of it (snip-snip).
6. Dry shampoos don’t clean your hair
Clean hair doesn’t start with dry shampoos. The product only serves to absorb the sebum and sweat from your hair and add a nice smell to it. If you’re unlucky enough to end up with bird doo-doo in your hair, do yourself a favour and use a conventional wet shampoo.
7. All hair types should be conditioned
Whether you have fine, thick, long or short hair, it still needs to be conditioned properly. The conditioning will help to moisturise the hair and give it a nice sheen. The frequency of conditioning will depend on your hair type and the climate of your area of residence. Drier and more arid conditions would mean that you could stand to benefit from conditioning three days a week.
Healthy hair not only grows better, but looks better too! If you’re the type that often takes to styling products when it comes to doing your hair, it’s even more important that you take the necessary steps to ensure that your locks are thoroughly cleaned at the end of the day. Let’s all try to keep our hair on our heads instead of the pillow!
