In a carb-rich society, the struggle is quite real when it comes to finding a cafe that offers low-carb mains. While it can be decidedly hard to find a cafe that's low-carb friendly, it's not entirely impossible. If you're in Sydney, here are some spots to visit if you wish to dine-out without spiking your blood sugar levels.
272-274 Willoughby Rd, Naremburn NSW 2065, Australia
Whole food and wholesome come hand in hand. Sprout Wholefood Cafe is a gem in the lower North Shore that satisfies their customers with the Naked Breakfast - a menu of grilled haloumi, poached eggs, avo, tomato salsa and mushies, all brought together with Sprout’s super green pesto.
Their lunch meals are more protein-packed with the Protein Bowl – that’s your choice of braised lamb and citrus dressing or grilled miso chicken served on a bed of kale and cabbage slaw and fermented veg, topped off with poached egg.
2. Ruby’s Diner
173-179 Bronte Rd, Queens Park NSW 2022, Australia
Ruby's Diner is a local hotspot as it sees snaking queues eager to dine at this low-carb cafe. It's nourishing breakfast is perhaps the favourite item on the menu and is best paired with Ruby’s speciality coffees. The establishment also happens to be a huge fan of bulletproof coffee: black coffee blended with grass-fed butter, MCT oil and vanilla whey protein over ice. It's like a milkshake but without the copious amounts of sugar.
The Paleo Burger is another must-try. It comes with a thick-cut, grass-fed organic beef patty, all the Aussie toppings, plus a poached egg, and all held together by a lettuce bun. “Make it primal” and add vintage cheddar if you’d like, too. A burger without a wheat bun we can do, but having one without cheese would be a cardinal sin!
3. Preach Cafe
Shop 1/112-116 Campbell Parade, Bondi Beach NSW 2026, Australia
Preach Cafe is known for its Portobello Mushroom Cups as they are stuffed with maple beef bacon, basil goats cheese, heirloom tomato and kale crisp. It's awesome warehouse interior is usually a hit amongst patrons too. Ketogenic diners will also be pleased to find that diet-friendly options are indicated with a “k” in the menu; no worries here!
4. About Life
About Life is the biggest low-carb restaurant franchise in Sydney, with 7 locations spanning from Cammeray to Double Bay. Renowned for its chill atmosphere and low-carb goodies, dining here makes for a perfect weekend out. Their selection includes Protein Bread loaves and a 3-egg omelette that covers an entire plate, stuffed with three fillings of your choice.
Their lunchtime menu allows you to choose from one of the Signature Proteins paired with any 2 low carb veggie sides for a set price – there’s everything from Miso, Ginger & Sesame Barramundi or Dukkah Crusted Huon Tasmanian Salmon, to Pulled Pork cooked in bone broth or Chicken Breast with oregano garlic and lemon.
You certainly don't need carbohydrates to have an enjoyable dining experience! The low-carb lifestyle has certainly become popular in recent times and while the ketogenic diet does confer certain benefits, it's always important to you consult a licensed dietitian if you have any doubts as whether such a diet is right for you. Even if you decide to go with a different nutrition plan, there no reason why you can't enjoy a low-carb meal every now and then!
