Exercising while abroad can be difficult due to the lack of accessible facilities around your area of stay. However, there is one exercise which is always easily accessible — running! With the right routes planned out, running allows you to explore more places while simultaneously keeping your fitness in check!

Sun Moon Lake

55547 No. 599, Jhongshan Rd., Yuchi Township, Nantou Country 555, Taiwan

At 30km, this trail will almost definitely prove challenging if you attempt to complete it in one go. Located just out of Taichung, Sun Moon Lake is a popular tourist destination as well. Enjoy the beautiful scenery of the lake as you take on the trails surrounding the waters.

Keelung River Paths

Shilin District, Taipei City, Taiwan

Compared to Sun Moon Lake and other running trails set amongst nature, Keelung River Path is a relatively easy one to conquer due to its flat terrain. Stretching less than 20km, this trail is well-suited to beginners. Additionally, you can drop by the nearby night markets when you're done to relax after a vigorous run.

Tamsui River Paths

Tamsui District, New Taipei City, Taiwan 251

Another waterside running path worth visiting is the Tamsui River Paths. If you intend to run along this route, you might wish to catch the sunrise or sunset, as the scene of the sun glistening on the clear blue waters is simply breath-taking! Additionally, be sure not to miss the lover’s bridge, Tamsui Old Street and Fisherman’s Wharf during your run.

Yangmingshan National Park

No. 1-20, Zhuzihu Road, Beitou District, Yangmingshan, Taipei City 11292, Taiwan

As a national park of Taiwan, Yangmingshan is well-known to locals and tourists alike. Though the park is out of the city area and therefore a little bit out of the way, the scenery awaiting runners is definitely worth the trip! Do not miss xiao you keng, qing tiang ang and tian xi yuan, all of which are the well-loved hotspots in the park. Just a caution to all runners—the trail might be challenging due to its hilly nature.

The next time you visit a new country, try using running as a means to explore the environment! It's a heart-pounding way of taking in a foreign country and can also be a great way to meet other like-minded people! It's not the typical tourist experience, but you don't hear us complaining about it!
